Can Your Boss Deduct Wages for Mistakes or Accidents?

Many employees are told that mistakes—like breaking something at work, making an error on the till, or damaging company property—will be taken out of their wages. But is this actually legal?
In Ireland, your employer cannot deduct money from your wages for accidents or mistakes unless:
✔️ You agreed in writing (e.g., in your contract or another signed
document).
✔️ The deduction is reasonable and reflects the actual cost.
✔️ You were informed in advance that this could happen.
Under the Payment of Wages Act 1991, your employer cannot legally deduct wages unless it's required by law, agreed upon in writing, or due to an over-payment. Even if there is a policy in place, deductions must be fair.
